A conservative Mexican Congresswoman made news recently when she made a unique argument against gay marriage during a marriage equality forum called “Matrimonio Iqualitario” in Puebla, Mexico.
Ana Maria Jimenez Ortiz had this to say:
“A marriage should only be considered amongst people that can look at each other in the eye while having sexual intercourse. Something that does not happen in homosexual couples.”
Jimenez Ortiz’s husband recently died of boredom.
The Latin Times reports that Jimenez Ortiz was citing the “New Family Structures“ study conducted by professor Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas. The study claims that that children adopted by gay couples have a tendency to become an adult that is closer to drugs and depression.
Released last summer, the academic research found that children of a parent in a same-sex relationship were more likely to experience negative outcomes later in life, as compared to children raised in heterosexual households.
Though the study was found to be methodically flawed, documents obtained through public-records requests later indicated that the research, bankrolled by conservatives, was also designed to manipulate public policy.
The Congresswoman was later attacked for her statement, and according to SDP Noticias, took to her Twitter to say the following translated by the Latin Times:
“In no time did I attack any of the assistants on the panel. I manifested my posture of the issues in a respectful manner and with my convictions, it is the only way we will come to common ground on these important issues.”
She then continues, “I’m sorry that my participation was taken out of context and doesn’t sum up the exposition that I made and that this has generated a series of attacks towards me on social networks, from people that unfortunately was not there and that the only information they have to attack is from one source.”
